MALTMAN FAMILIES

This photo is of John Maltman and Letitia Mulholland with their young family c.1878. They probably resided at Bald Knob, near Landsborough at the time.

This is a story based around a Scotsman who apparently wore a kilt after his arrival in the 'colony'. He was engaged in a number of of jobs and occupations as he was enterprising and energetic, while caring for his large family.

In Glasgow he was an industrial chemist, a trade he pursued while residing at Mooloolah, Queensland. The part of the river where he made soap is still called the soaphole, although he sold the rights of his business to Campbell and Sons, soapmakers of Bowen Hills, Brisbane.

Informant James Maltman was [widower] living 34 Ann St, Port Dundas. Reference 1877d/Kelvin 644/9/733.

Death Certificate - JAMES d.8.7.1884. 51 Cedar St., Glasgow, James Maltman cooper-journeyman, widower of Mary Shearer, aged 74 s/o James Maltman, hand loom weaver deceased and Mary Maltman, m.s McLeod deceased, informant - Margaret Murdoch who says she was daughter in law, 14 Corn street, Glasgow. Not quite accurate. See marriage Maltman to Murdoch [? second marriage ?] Ret.1884d/Milton/644/8/503] Mary Maltman's maiden name is queried. It is evident that both these girls are Bain as in original research, but when they died the informants were unaware of their maiden name and just had to guess. NOW I dont wish to presume, but they both used the same name for their daughter Janet, so the relationship was there somewhere. One daughter died and it seems important to give the 'Bain' name to the next daughter as it was a very strict custom during that time.

Mary Strang MALTMAN rn.12.7.1861 Joseph HORN in Calton, Glasgow. It may be that Mary and Margaret Shearer were sisters or cousins who married two brothers. Records shows; Mary Shearer b.27.8.1806 to John SHEARER and JANET BAIN Glasgow. Margaret Shearer b.19.8.1802 to Robert SHEARER and JEAN HUTCHESON Gorbals. Dates fit well for marriages and are the only entries that seem to fit. More research needed but this gives a good picture of closely woven families. AUSTRALIAN MALTMAN FAMILY STORY

The Maltman story begins with John who sailed in 'Janet Mitchell' to Melbourne, where he disembarked to search for his nugget of gold. The vessel reached Melbourne on 6.1.1853 with Capt.Fisher,174 passengers,12 iron houses and oil. Gold had been discovered in 1851 at Ballarat. so it seams that John spent about three years in search of gold, before boarding vessel 'Gil Blas' for Dunedin - Otago, New Zealand as reported in the Argus News 22.1.1856. It appears, John sailed from New Zealand between 1860 and 1863. His story begins with the acquisition of land at Tiaro, (place of dead trees) near Maryborough in Queensland, where he began a lifetine friendship with his like minded adventurer, Willian Landsborough.
